Carpet Care 101: Expert Tips For Lasting Elegance

From Vacuuming Techniques To Stain Removal, Master The Art Of Carpet Maintenance

Maintaining the allure of your carpet involves strategic care. Vacuum at least 2-3 times weekly to thwart dirt infiltration, and place a sturdy doormat to curb external grime. Nixing shoes at the door mitigates wear. For stubborn dirt, a stiff brush aids removal—beware of loop piles. Refrain from situating light carpets near entrances. Tackling stains promptly is crucial; a bleach solution works wonders for polypropylene carpets. Dab, don't rub, and work from the stain's edge. The vacuuming approach varies—cylinder for loops, upright, or cylinder with a beater bar for cuts. Choose wisely for soft, deep piles. Seek professional help with DIY carpet machines.

Cleaning & Maintaining Your Carpet

CARING FOR YOUR CARPET
Your carpet should complete the perfect look in your home. It will add style, comfort and warmth. Naturally you want the look, feel and enjoyment to last. To help you do just that you’ll need to take good care of it, maintain it as well as you can, and clean it properly. We’ve prepared some expert advice below to help you help your carpet.

MAINTENANCE
The key to good maintenance is to avoid particles of loose dirt and dust working their way into the carpet pile where they can act abrasively on the fibres and discolour the carpet.

Vacuum regularly at least 2-3 times per week.

A large doormat will help reduce dirt from the outside being spread around the house.

Removing shoes at the front door will lessen the impact of everyday wear & tear.

Any stubborn dirt or bits stuck to your carpet can be brushed off using a stiff bristle brush. This will also help the pile pull back. NOTE: Not to be done on loop pile carpets.

Avoid where possible laying light coloured carpets next to external entrances.

STAIN REMOVAL
The only carpet that is safe to use a bleach mix on is a 100% polypropylene carpet. Always check with us in-store if you are not sure of your carpets make up. Bleach will lift colour from wool, cord or any other carpet type so it’s really important to make sure your carpet is definitely made only from polypropylene if you don’t want patches. For particularly stubborn stains like ink, red wine and ground-in mud on polypropylene:

  • Take on spillages and stains immediately, don’t allow them to soak in.

  • Always wear rubber gloves when working with bleach and a mask to protect your respiratory system from the caustic fumes. If possible open a window.

  • Use a solution of 1 parts bleach to 6 parts tap water in a spray bottle. (For every 100ML of bleach, add 600ML of tap water)

  • Evenly cover the stain and leave for 30 – 60 minutes. DO NOT OVER SOAK! Less is more here.

  • Make sure to dab, not rub the stain. Vigorous rubbing can cause damage.

  • Always work from the outside of the stain inwards to help prevent spreading.

  • Use a brush if needed to remove any stubborn dirt.

  • Semi-solid substances should be removed with a plastic spatula if possible.

  • At home carpet cleaning machines can be difficult to pilot with no experience, we recommend not using these at all as they can be purchased and used by anyone and it is very easy to cause damage to the carpet through over soaking, causing the floor to become damp and making the carpet go moldy.

VACUUM CLEANING
Man made fibre and wool carpets should be vacuumed regularly. Depending on the type of carpet will decide how you should vacuum.

LOOP PILE CARPET

Loop pile carpets should be vacuumed with a cylinder cleaner using the suction head only. Avoid using the beater heads and brushes - they will catch and lift the fibres and eventually this will give your carpet a bobbled or felted appearance.

CUT PILE CARPET

Cut pile carpets should ideally be vacuumed with an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater bar and brush. You can also opt to use a cylinder vacuum cleaner with a similar attachment.

SOFT DEEP PILE CARPET

We recommend a vacuum cleaner with an adjustable height for soft, deep cut pile carpets. This helps ensure proper airflow over the pile surface during cleaning.
